Description

This recipe for caramelized onions features mouthwatering, rich flavors and simple prep. Ideal for sandwiches, dips, or enhancing your favorite dishes with a touch of sweet and savory goodness!


Ingredients

  • 4 lbs medium or large yellow onions
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Cut the onions in half from root to tip and remove the root.
  2. Thinly slice the onion halves lengthwise into half moons about ¼-inch thick.
  3. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter and olive oil together.
  4. In batches, add the sliced onions and cook, stirring often, until soft and translucent, about 2 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are deep brown, about 45-50 minutes.
  6. Once deep brown, stir in the brown sugar and salt and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes until well combined.
  7. Remove from heat and let the onions cool in the pot before transferring to an airtight container.

Notes

Store caramelized onions in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
These onions can be used in various dishes such as dips, sandwiches, or soups.
