Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Burger buns
  • Pickles
  • Shredded cheddar
  • Coleslaw

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, cooking for 3 to 4 minutes until slightly softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  3. Transfer the meat mixture to the slow cooker.
  4. In the slow cooker, mix in the ketchup, tomato sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir until thoroughly combined.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours or on high for 2 to 3 hours, until thick and flavorful.
  6. Taste the mixture and adjust seasonings if necessary. For a thicker consistency, cook uncovered on high for 15 to 20 minutes.
  7. Serve the mixture on toasted buns with your favorite toppings.

Notes

For added sweetness, substitute brown sugar with maple syrup.
Feel free to adjust the spices according to your heat preference. Try adding more chili powder or crushed red pepper if you like it spicy.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
