- 1/2 cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 1/4 cup (35g) powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour, spoon and leveled
- gel or liquid-gel food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the all-purpose flour, mixing until there are no dry streaks remaining.
- If coloring the cookie petals, reserve a little less than 1/4 of the dough for the centers before adding a few drops of food coloring to the larger portion.
- Pinch off teaspoon-sized portions of the different doughs and roll them into smooth balls. Chill in the fridge for 30 to 60 minutes if sticky.
- On a parchment-lined baking sheet, shape flower cookies by placing one uncolored dough ball in the center and surrounding it with five colored dough balls for petals. Ensure there is about 1 inch of space between each cookie.
- Chill the shaped cookies in the freezer for 10 minutes to maintain their shape. Preheat the oven to 350°F during this time.
- Bake in the center of the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, until they are no longer shiny on top and lightly golden brown at the edges.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For vibrant colors, add more food coloring as desired to the dough.
These cookies can be decorated further with icing for added visual appeal.
